The History of Sports in Japan Vol. 1
Probably the sport in Japan most people think of is “Sumo.”
Sumo is actually mentioned in the very old Japanese book called “Nihon-shoki” issued in year 720, so yes, Sumo is the absolute Japanese traditional sport.
On the other hand, how about other modern sports?
After Edo government collapsed, Meiji government brought some foreign scholars to Japan for academic expansion in Japan. They brought some modern sports which were popular in western countries to Japan and those sports got popular among students.
English language lecturer called Frederick William Strange, who has been called “The Father of Modern Sports” in Japan, tried Japanese people involved in sports like track and field competitions, boat or baseball.
