The History of Sports in Japan Vol. 3 (Baseball)

Baseball is probably the most popular sport in Japan in terms of viewers and revenue.

The first person who taught baseball to Japanese people was an American lecturer, Frederick William Strange (see “The History of Sports in Japan Vol. 1.”)

In 1905, the baseball team of a very Japanese famous university went to the U.S. for their practice and brought techniques and equipment of baseball to Japan which made baseball much more popular in Japan.

In 1915, the even-now-famous high school baseball competition has started.

In 1936, professional baseball league has started.  While Japan was in the second world war, it was cancelled for a moment but it restarted again after the war.  TV broadcast of the professional baseball stated in 1953.
