The History of Sports in Japan Vol. 4 (Soccer)

10 years after the football association in England, two English navy soldiers came to Japan.  They taught how to play soccer (football) to Japanese navy soldiers in their free time between navy trainings.

In 1929, Japan joined FIFA and joined Berlin Olympic games in 1936.  Japan fought against Sweden there and won. 

After the second world war, Japan rejoined FIFA as Japan had been eliminated from FIFA during the war.  In 1954, Japan joined the World Cup game.  At Mexico Olympics in 1968, we got the bronze medal.

Professional soccer league has started in 1991.  Soccer got more popular by it.  Japan and Korea held the World Cup game together in 2002.
